Blamire and Davies met at school in Sussex during the mid-late 1990s. They began singing together in their school choir. They spent a year in New Orleans in 2002, where they absorbed American blues music. Returning to England, they discovered British folk at the Sidmouth Folk Week Festival while working as car park attendants. They later stayed a year living in Vancouver, Canada, before returning to London to start performing. In 2007 they supported Bryan Ferry on a tour of the UK and later toured with The Handsome Family in the Spring of 2009. They began self-releasing singles and their first EP was released in 2009

In December 2009 Jack White's Third Man Label released their 7" single "Gastown/ Riversong". The track was produced by Jack White and featured him on guitar and drums.

In the Spring of 2010, the Smoke Fairies recorded their album Through Low Light and Trees at Sawmills studio in rural Cornwall with producer Head (who had worked with PJ Harvey) and their current live band. The album was released on 6th September 2010. In November 2010 the Fairies' recording of Neil Young's "Alabama" appeared on a special Mojo album to mark the approaching fortieth anniversary of Young's Harvest LP.[1]

Having toured with Richard Hawley across Britain in autumn 2009 and then playing several shows at the 2010 SXSW festival, they then headed off to the United States to support Laura Marling for a month. The Smoke Fairies have also guested on Richard Hawley's recent EP False Lights from the Land.
