時間是1979年，美國俄亥俄州一個平凡小鎮。少年喬·蘭布（喬爾·科特尼 Joel Courtney 飾）痛失母親，生死悲痛讓他久久地沉默。數月后，他應好朋友查爾斯（雷利·格里芬斯 Riley Griffiths 飾）的邀請，決定約上幾個朋友一起用超8攝像機（8 mm）拍攝一部恐怖電影。當然令他下定決心的，是那個令她心儀的美麗女孩愛麗絲（艾麗·范寧 Elle Fanning 飾）也參與其中。在某個夜晚，愛麗絲駕駛父親的汽車載著伙伴們來到火車站拍戲，誰知卻目睹了一場極其慘烈的火車事故。
這起事故還只是一系列不尋常事件的開始，小鎮上的人們相繼離奇失蹤，各種奇怪的事件也接連發生。少年們的攝像機記錄關于這一切的秘密……
