　　安妮（克里斯汀•斯科特•托馬斯 Kristin Scott Thomas 飾）的女兒格雷斯（斯嘉麗•約翰遜 Scarlett Johansson 飾） 喜歡騎馬，卻在一次事故中和好友一同從馬背摔下，好友遇難，而格雷斯也摔斷了一條腿，她心愛的馬匹“朝圣者”受傷得面目全非。格雷斯的心里蒙上了揮之不去的陰霾。 
　　母親心里十分著急。聽說蒙大拿有精通馬語之人湯姆（羅伯特•雷德福 Robert Redford 飾），安妮決定攜女兒和“朝圣者”同往療傷。湯姆起初不答應，終被感動，格雷斯和“朝圣者”在馬語者精心的訓練調養下慢慢復原，而離開了大都市的安妮也沉浸在那一片安靜廣袤的天地中。但是，安妮為此付出了代價——她長期離職，被解雇了，同時和丈夫的感情越來越疏遠淡漠。另一方面，湯姆的與眾不同讓安妮心里泛起了陣陣漣漪。

Thomas Newman's score for Robert Redford's The Horse Whisperer walks the perilously fine line between mystical and mawkish. There's no denying the magical, larger-than-life sweep of Newman's majestic arrangements and stately melodies, but there's also no shaking the emotional calculation at work here as well. The music doesn't merely tug the heartstrings; it yanks them. Wrought from lush synthesizers, backwoods strings, and French horn flourishes, The Horse Whisperer nevertheless boasts a surprising affinity for nuance that makes its climactic moments that much more dynamic. For all its sentimentality, this is music of uncommon beauty and artistry.
