Dream Theater成立於80年代中期，最初的團名為Majesty，由三位出自美國波士頓著名的Berklee音樂學院的吉他手John Petrucci、鼓手Mike Portnoy、bass手John Myung，再加上keyboard手Kevin Moore所組成。1986年3月，主唱Chris Collins加入DT，并錄制了一張demo。然而由於Chris的嗓音無法勝任DT的要求，不久離開了DT。87年新任主唱Charlie Dominici加入，團名也正式更換為Dream Theater，同年11月發行了具有歷史意義的第一張專輯《When Dream And Day Unite》。專輯具有極佳的音樂性和技巧性，并已展露出DT特有的編曲特色，然而這張專輯卻是叫好不叫座，慘淡的銷售成績使樂團面臨多方面的問題。由於主唱的音色和演唱實力仍然無法與DT的音樂相契合，於是被要求離去。
